One list, eight ways

The Wire

Everything that landed on the award boards in the last few days, laid out eight ways — the mosaic, the poster, the terminal and five more. None of them is invented for the demonstration — each is a shape winners actually build, and the figure beside it is how often.

A crowd dissolving into horizontal scan lines, faces breaking apart into bands of colour.
Revelatio Studio 7.37

Choosing a layout is usually called taste, which makes it sound unarguable. It is not quite that. The mosaic is the gallery, the poster is the big background image, the terminal is work that leads on type and carries no pictures at all — and each one appears at a rate you can count.

The same 62 items fill all eight. Watch how many you can see at once, which ones get to be important, and how much you have to do before anything happens.

Live from 6 sources — The FWA, Awwwards, One Page Love, SaaS Landing Page, Minimal Gallery, Codrops — refreshed with the rest of the site. Newest item is 1 hours old. Rendered at build time: no third-party relay, no script, and every arrangement stops moving under prefers-reduced-motion.

The Marquee

horizontal layout · 4% of winners

Two rows running in opposite directions, with no beginning and no end to arrive at. You read whatever happens to be passing.

The rarest thing on this page. Sideways movement asks a reader to read against the grain of the language, and most winners decide it is not worth it.

The Poster

big background images · 9% of winners

One item, full width, the headline set as large as it will go. Everything else on the list waits its turn.

A tenth of winners hand the first screen to a single picture. It works when there is one thing to say and fails the moment there are two.

The Mosaic

gallery · 8% of winners

A wall of pictures, grey until you point at one. The grid does the arranging; the cursor does the editing.

The workhorse. A tenth of winners are built on it, and it is the default for anyone whose work is the pictures.

The Stack

gestures / interaction · 10% of winners

A deck you push through one card at a time. Drag it, flick it, or use the arrow keys.

Rising. Roughly one winner in eight now expects a gesture rather than a click — and this is scroll-snap, so it costs no script and stays keyboard-reachable.

The Terminal

typography · 18% of winners

No pictures at all. Rules, figures and a monospaced column — the list as a working document.

A fifth of winners lead on type alone. This is the one arrangement that improves as the list grows — forty items read faster here than eight do anywhere else on the page.

The Ledger

unusual navigation · 11% of winners

A numbered index that looks like nothing until you move the cursor, and then the picture arrives beside your hand.

Under a tenth of winners try it. It only works when every item is worth the reveal, which is why most lists cannot carry it.

The Orbit

3d · 38% of winners

The list bent into perspective. Nearest is largest; the rest fall away behind it.

Depth is on nearly two in five winners — the most common ambitious move in web design, and the easiest to overspend on.

The Contact Sheet

photographic · 4% of winners

Nine frames, numbered in the margin, the way a photographer looks at a roll before deciding which one is the picture.

Almost nobody does this on the web — four in a hundred — which is exactly why it still reads as a decision rather than a template.

Choosing between them

Each Arrangement Says Something Different

Winners carrying big background images — the poster arrangement, done for real.

Eight arrangements of one list, and every one of them is an argument about what matters. The poster says there is a single thing worth your attention today. The terminal says there are forty-four and you are capable of scanning. The contact sheet says these are all the same kind of thing, judge them together.

The emphatic arrangements turn out to be rarer than they look from the outside, and the restrained ones do most of the work. That is not an argument for restraint. It is an argument for knowing which one you are choosing, and why, before the first screen is drawn.
